Fashion-Forward Preteens | Philadelphia Teen Portrait Session on Broad Street

ome kids hit that preteen stage where they suddenly have opinions about everything — their clothes, their hair, their style, and definitely whether they want their picture taken.

And honestly? I love that stage.

Because when kids start developing their own sense of style, portrait sessions stop feeling like something “mom made them do” and start feeling a little more like editorial fashion moments.

This Philadelphia teen portrait session on Broad Street was exactly that.

Two preteens stepped right into the energy of the city and turned the streets of Philadelphia into their own runway.

Why Philadelphia Is Perfect for Teen Portrait Sessions

Philadelphia has a completely different vibe from most portrait locations.

Instead of quiet parks or beaches, the city brings:

• historic architecture
• dramatic light and shadows
• movement and energy
• bold urban textures

Locations like Broad Street, City Hall, the Kimmel Center, and the Merriam Theater create a backdrop that feels a little more fashion editorial than traditional portrait.

And teens love that.

There’s something about the city that instantly makes sessions feel more grown-up, stylish, and fun.

The Girl in Blue – Color Against the City

One of the things I always recommend for city portraits is color.

Philadelphia streets tend to have neutral tones — stone buildings, gray sidewalks, dark shadows — so bold colors instantly stand out.

Her blue dress was the perfect example.

The soft movement of the fabric caught the wind along Broad Street while the color popped beautifully against the architecture. Paired with simple sandals and natural styling, the look felt youthful but still polished.

But what really made the images work was her confidence.

At this age, kids are starting to understand how they want to present themselves to the world, and you could see that sense of individuality come through in every frame.

A Classic Look – Sophisticated but Age-Appropriate

While the blue dress brought playful energy to the shoot, the second look leaned into a more classic editorial feel.

A crisp dress shirt with black pants created a polished look that felt timeless without being overly formal.

City sessions are great for this kind of styling because the architecture adds a natural sophistication to the photos.

When kids feel comfortable in what they're wearing, it changes everything about how they show up in front of the camera — posture, expression, even the way they move through the space.

That confidence is what makes portraits feel natural instead of posed.

Light, Architecture, and the Energy of the City

One of my favorite things about photographing teens in Philadelphia is the way light moves through the city.

Buildings create pockets of shadow, reflections bounce off glass, and sunlight cuts through the streets in ways you can’t recreate anywhere else.

Instead of controlling every piece of light, I often let the city do part of the work.

The result feels a little more cinematic and a little less staged — which is exactly the kind of look teens tend to love.

Preteens and Teen Portraits (Ages 9–16)

Preteens typically fall between ages 9–12, but this style of portrait session works beautifully for older teens as well.

This age group is such an interesting transition:

• kids are developing their own style
• personalities are becoming stronger
• confidence is starting to show

Portrait sessions at this stage often feel more like creative collaborations rather than traditional photo shoots.

And honestly, the kids usually end up having more fun than they expected.

If your child is entering those preteen or teenage years, it can be the perfect time to create portraits that feel a little more fashion-inspired, modern, and expressive.

Philadelphia offers some of my favorite locations for this style of session, blending the city's architecture with each teen’s individual personality.
