Birthday Portraits on the Ben Franklin Bridge
A Philadelphia Portrait Session with a Little Girl and Balloons
Some locations feel instantly cinematic.
The Ben Franklin Bridge is one of them.
Stretching between Philadelphia and New Jersey, it’s a place where steel arches, river views, and city skyline all come together. On this evening, it became the setting for a birthday portrait session with a little girl in a bright blue dress and a handful of gold balloons.
The wind coming off the Delaware River tugged at her hair, the sun dropped behind the skyline, and the whole scene felt like something out of a movie.
CLose-up of this lady!!! :) Hair blowing in the wind and all.
Photographing Childhood Along the Philadelphia Waterfront
One of the things I love about photographing children in Philadelphia is how much character the city offers.
Historic architecture. Bridges. Water. Movement.
The Ben Franklin Bridge gives you all of it in one place. The steel structure creates dramatic lines while the open sky and river soften the scene, especially during golden hour.
For this session, the goal was simple. Let the location breathe and let childhood unfold naturally.
This little one was happy to have her birthday portraits at the Ben Franklin Bridge.
A Blue Dress, Balloons, and a Lot of Personality
The birthday girl arrived in a Dollcake dress that practically danced in the wind. The bright blue fabric stood out beautifully against the muted steel tones of the bridge and the warm sunset light.
Love this magical shot and this little birthday girl!!!
And then there were the balloons.
Gold at first. Later we switched to colorful ones, which brought even more energy to the photos. Kids don’t stand still for long, and honestly that’s where the best images come from.
The twirling. The running. The little moments in between.
All smiles for this twirling little monkey!
The Light Over the Delaware River
Golden hour along the river always brings something special.
As the sun started dropping behind the Philadelphia skyline, the light wrapped around the bridge and softened everything. The wind lifted the balloons and the hem of the dress just enough to create movement in every frame.
It’s the kind of light photographers wait for.
All smiles at sunset this one on the Ben Franklin Bridge!
Why Philadelphia Makes a Beautiful Portrait Location
Philadelphia offers an incredible mix of textures for portrait photography.
She’s looking out on the Delaware at a helicopter flying by, but made it look like art.
Historic streets, waterfront views, parks, and iconic structures like the Ben Franklin Bridge all create unique backdrops for families and children. Each neighborhood has its own personality.
Looking all cute as the sun is setting.

The Magic of Unscripted Childhood
Kids rarely perform for the camera the way adults expect.
They wander. They twirl. They laugh at things no one else notices.
That’s exactly what makes photographing them so much fun.
During this session the birthday girl alternated between shy smiles and full-on spinning with the balloons flying behind her. Those little unscripted moments ended up being the images that felt the most real.
She’s thinking of summer and ice cream here.
All chill and relaxed. Wish I could be this chill!
A Birthday Session to Remember
As the sun set behind the bridge and the balloons started floating higher in the breeze, the session slowly wound down.
We switched to colored balloons now. Hey, got to love it.
The blue dress, the glowing sky, and the skyline behind her created one of those simple but unforgettable scenes that childhood is made of.
And honestly, those are always my favorite sessions.
