New Jersey Fine Art Photographer: A Day in the Life

Behind the scenes of a NJ fine art photographer: balancing client wishes with creative vision for stunning, customized portrait sessions in South Jersey.

Luxury Fine Art Portraiture for Families, Children & More

Ah, the life of a New Jersey fine art photographer—it’s not all glamorous poses and picture-perfect moments. Actually, it’s mostly running around making sure no one’s hair is sticking up and explaining why wearing neon green isn’t the best choice for a family shoot. It’s a balance of artistry, chaos, and just a sprinkle of magic.

Fine art images capturing the essence of various seasons in the Philadelphia area, from serene beach shoots to urban settings in the snow, expertly crafted by Shooting Star Photography.

These were taken at very different times of the year, but if you learn your lighting, you can offer consistency through all your seasons.

The Art of Fine Art Photography: It’s All About the Details (Seriously)

Being a fine art photographer means I’m not just snapping a photo; I’m capturing your soul. Okay, maybe not your soul, but I’m certainly capturing a gorgeous portrait that you'll want to hang on your wall for the next 50 years (or at least until your next family photo shoot).

The first rule of fine art photography? Clothing matters. No, you cannot show up in sweatpants, a hoodie, and socks with holes. We’re not going for “I just woke up” chic. If you want your photos to look as stunning as you feel, let’s coordinate those outfits! Think soft pastels, neutral tones, maybe even a little boho chic—but leave the flannel at home. Trust me, your photos will thank you.

I love flowers and beautiful vibrant colors/light… so I incorporate this into my fine art sessions.

Location and Light: A Match Made in Photographer Heaven

Now, here’s where the magic happens. Location is everything. Sure, we could go to your backyard, but you’re not going to get that dreamy, golden hour vibe we’re after. I mean, unless your backyard has magical flowers and perfect lighting, in which case, I’d like to shoot there every day.

In South Jersey, we’ve got it all—beaches, forests, wildflower fields, and parks. And don’t even get me started on the golden hour. It’s like nature’s filter, except it’s free. If you want those soft, glowing portraits you see in my portfolio, then you have to trust me when I say timing is everything. If you want to shoot at noon when the sun is high, don’t expect that magical glow. It’ll just be hot and squinty. So, no, we’re not doing that.

Grooming: Not Just for Models, But Also for Your Uncle Bob

I know, I know—grooming sounds like a no-brainer, but I’ve had to remind people more than once. If you're planning on being in front of the camera for a fine art session, maybe skip the “just woke up” look. Get your hair in check, put on some makeup (or not, whatever makes you feel fabulous), and please, please, if you’re wearing a short dress, let’s shave those legs. The details matter, and believe me, the camera will pick them up!

Finding Your Own Fine Art Style (and Why You Shouldn’t Copy Mine)

So, what’s my style? Honestly, it’s a little like a fancy coffee drink. It’s a mix of elegance, a touch of vibrancy, and a whole lotta movement. I love to get people in the moment—think kids running wild through fields of flowers in Cherry Hill, NJ. Sure, I could pose everyone and make them stand perfectly still, but it’s that raw, unfiltered joy that I’m after. And if your little one just can’t stop running around, well, let them! We’ll capture that. That’s when you get those magic moments.

But here's the thing, every photographer has their own style. Just like every artist has their own...uh, taste in music. So, if you see someone else doing something similar to what I do, don’t panic. Steal like an artist—but add your own twist. That’s how we all grow, right?

Advice for Aspiring Fine Art Photographers: Keep Shooting, Don’t Go on Pinterest

If you’re thinking about becoming a fine art photographer in New Jersey, here’s my advice: Don’t just look at Pinterest for inspiration (seriously, put down the phone). Go outside, find some hidden gems in South Jersey, take photos, make mistakes, and then make more mistakes. The best way to grow as a photographer is to keep shooting, keep experimenting, and maybe learn a little about lighting. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows (unless we’re shooting at golden hour, then it is).

Final Thoughts: Make Art, Don’t Just Take Photos

At the end of the day, fine art photography is about capturing moments that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s a family beach shoot at the Jersey Shore or a maternity portrait in a golden field, it’s about creating a work of art you can hang on your wall and cherish forever.

So, remember: get the clothes right, find the best location, and trust me to help you look like you’ve just stepped out of a magazine. After all, your portrait should be as stunning as you are—no flannel required.

Embracing Change: From Studio to Outdoor Fine Art

Embrace the transition from studio to outdoor fine art photography. Join me on this exciting journey as I capture breathtaking moments amidst nature's beauty.

Change is inevitable, and as a business owner, I've learned to embrace it rather than resist it. It's with mixed emotions that I announce the closure of my studio location in Haddon Township. While it's difficult to say goodbye to a space that has been a hub for creativity and connection, I'm also filled with excitement for the next chapter in my journey as a fine art photographer. My heart has always been drawn to the great outdoors, and this transition allows me to fully immerse myself in the beauty of nature while capturing stunning moments through my lens.

Teen girl posing for a fine art studio portrait in New Jersey, showcasing elegance and style in a professional photoshoot.

Some of the studio art we created over the years in Haddon Township.

  1. Reflecting on the Journey:

Closing the doors of my studio isn't a decision I made lightly. It's the culmination of years of growth, learning, and evolution as an artist. From the moment I first picked up a camera, I knew that photography was more than just a passion—it was my calling. The studio provided a space for me to hone my craft, collaborate with clients, and cultivate a sense of community. It's been a place of inspiration and transformation, and I'm deeply grateful for the memories and connections made within those walls.

    Embracing Outdoor Fine Art Photography:

  2. While the studio served as a central hub for my business, my heart has always been in outdoor photography. There's something magical about capturing the raw beauty of nature—the play of light and shadow, the vibrant colors, and the ever-changing landscapes. Transitioning to outdoor fine art photography allows me to fully embrace my love for the natural world and share that passion with others. Whether it's a majestic mountain range, a serene lakeside sunset, or a hidden forest path, I find endless inspiration in the world around me.

  3. Connecting with Nature and Clients:

One of the most rewarding aspects of outdoor photography is the opportunity to connect with both nature and my clients on a deeper level. By stepping outside the confines of a studio, I'm able to create authentic and meaningful experiences that reflect the true essence of my subjects. Whether it's a family portrait session in a sun-dappled meadow or a romantic engagement shoot on a windswept beach, outdoor photography allows for genuine moments and emotions to shine through. It's about more than just taking pictures—it's about capturing memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

My Haddon Township photography studio, offering professional portrait sessions and fine art photography in South Jersey.

Bye studio! Thank you for all the memories! You’ve given me and others :)

While closing my studio location in Haddon Township marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my journey as a photographer. I'm grateful for the support of my clients, friends, and community throughout this transition, and I'm eager to continue creating meaningful and inspiring work in the great outdoors. Change can be daunting, but it's also an opportunity for growth, exploration, and reinvention. As I embark on this next adventure, I invite you to join me in celebrating the beauty of nature and the art of storytelling through photography.

For over a decade, I have loved providing beautiful images to our customers and cannot wait for what is in store!

Happy Shooting, my friends!

30th Street Station Portraits: Top Philadelphia Photography

Capture holiday magic at Philly's iconic 30th Street Station! Discover tips, laughter, and stunning Christmas photos with a Philadelphia photographer's journey.

Holiday Snaps with Style:

a PHUN… Philadelphia photographer, I am always on the lookout for unique and exciting locations to capture stunning images. Last December, I had the pleasure of exploring the iconic 30th Street Station for a fun Christmas photo shoot. Wearing the beautiful designs from Bentley and Lace, I embarked on a journey filled with laughter, joy, and holiday cheer. Join me as I share my experience and tips for creating memorable holiday snaps at this historic location.

Why 30th Street Station Is the Ultimate Backdrop

Oh, 30th Street Station, where do I even begin? This Philadelphia gem is a goldmine for photographers seeking that magical blend of grandeur and everyday hustle. Imagine towering columns that reach towards the heavens, sprawling marble floors that echo with the footsteps of travelers, and grand windows that bathe the interior in a warm, golden light. It’s like stepping into a scene from an old Hollywood film, but with the added buzz of Philly’s vibrant energy!!! The station is a true marvel. With restaurants and a flower cart. Very 1920’s 30’s vibes of grandeur.

portrait session at Christmas with a girl in a bentley and lace dress at 30th street station in philadelphia

Posing outside of 30th Street Station in Philadelphia with a green velvet dress on.

But wait, there's more! Each nook and cranny of this historical marvel tells a story, making it the ultimate playground for a Philadelphia photographer like me. Picture this: capturing a tender moment under the grand clock, or a stolen kiss by the whispering walls. The contrast between the majestic architecture and the intimate, candid moments of holiday cheer creates a visual feast that's hard to replicate elsewhere.

And let’s not forget about the spontaneous photo ops that arise in such a bustling setting! The station is alive with the comings and goings of people, each adding their unique flair to the frame. From hurried travelers to leisurely wanderers, these characters bring the heart and soul to your holiday snaps, giving them depth and a sense of place.

In essence, 30th Street Station isn't just a backdrop; it's a character in its own right, contributing drama, elegance, and a dash of serendipity to your photographs. Whether you’re capturing the grandeur of the architecture or the intimate moments between loved ones, this iconic location adds a layer of richness to your images that is unmistakably Philadelphian. So, grab your camera, and let’s make some merry memories at this unparalleled location. Trust me, your holiday photo album will thank you!

Dressing to Impress with Bentley and Lace

Stepping into 30th Street Station, with its aura of timeless elegance, calls for an outfit that's nothing short of show-stopping. That's where Bentley and Lace comes into the picture. Known for their breathtaking designs that weave together sophistication with a touch of whimsy, dressing up in their creations was a no-brainer for this festive photoshoot. It's like they say, the right outfit can make you feel invincible, and that's exactly the vibe we were going for - unstoppable holiday glam.

Picture this: flowing gowns and chic ensembles that capture the essence of the season, all while complementing the majestic backdrop of the station. Every swirl of fabric and meticulously chosen accessory added a layer of magic to the photos, making each shot look like it's straight out of a fairy tale set in urban Philadelphia. Bentley and Lace pieces are more than just clothes; they're statements of grace and beauty, which is precisely what we aimed to mirror against the grandeur of 30th Street Station.

A portrait of a girl twirling inside 30th street station in front of the christmas tree in philadelphia,

In front of the Christmas tree at the Philly Station.

Choosing the right outfit for a photoshoot, especially in a location as iconic as this, is about striking the perfect balance. You want to stand out, yet harmonize with the surroundings. With Bentley and Lace, the harmony was found in the intricate details of the dresses - the way they moved with the body and caught the light, mirroring the station’s own interplay of shadow and illumination. It was a dance of elegance and the architectural beauty around us.

And so, as we moved from one corner of the station to another, it was clear that the Bentley and Lace outfits were doing more than just making a style statement. They were weaving a narrative of festive elegance, one that complimented the soul of Philadelphia and the timeless charm of 30th Street Station. In every shot, every frame, the clothes whispered stories of holiday enchantment, making the photoshoot not just a visual feast, but a tale of fashion meeting architecture in the heart of Philly.

Capturing Candid Moments and Merry Memories

Diving into the heart of the holiday hustle and bustle at 30th Street Station, with my camera in hand, was like stepping into a live canvas of pure, unscripted joy. Each click of the shutter was an opportunity to freeze a moment of genuine happiness or an unexpected interaction in time. Imagine capturing a child's wide-eyed wonder as they gaze up at the towering Christmas tree, or the warm embrace of a couple reuniting at the arrivals gate. These are the candid, raw moments that truly encapsulate the essence of the holiday spirit, and they were happening all around us, waiting to be caught on camera.

The beauty of candid photography, especially in a place as lively and rich with character as 30th Street Station during the Christmas season, lies in its ability to tell a story without words. Each photograph becomes a narrative of its own, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the warmth, excitement, and tenderness of these shared human experiences. The laughter, the tears, the looks of anticipation, and the joyful reunions - they all paint a vivid picture of holiday cheer that's both heartwarming and deeply personal.

Navigating through the crowds, I kept my eyes peeled for those unguarded, spontaneous moments that often go unnoticed but are incredibly powerful in their simplicity. There's a certain magic in the way the festive lights reflect in the eyes of the beholders, or how the holiday decorations become the perfect backdrop for a photo that speaks a thousand words. These moments of candidness are fleeting, but when captured, they become timeless treasures, merry memories that continue to resonate long after the holiday season has passed.

In the end, it's these candid snapshots at 30th Street Station that weave together the rich tapestry of holiday memories. Each photo, a keepsake of joy, connection, and the spontaneous beauty of life, reminds us of the power of photography to capture the soul of the season.

Wrapping Up with Gratitude and Holiday Cheer

Reflecting on this festive photo frenzy at 30th Street Station, my heart is bursting with thanks. This adventure wasn't just about capturing the perfect shot—it was a celebration of the season, shared smiles, and the endless beauty of Philadelphia. The station, with its echoing corridors and twinkling lights, served as more than just a setting; it became a part of our holiday story, a backdrop to the laughter and the merry moments that unfolded with every click of my camera.

To everyone who follows this journey, from fellow photography enthusiasts to those who just enjoy a good holiday tale, your support means the world to me. It's a joy to bring these experiences to life and share them with you, adding a little extra sparkle to our holiday season. The magic of 30th Street Station during Christmas is something everyone should witness, and I'm thrilled I could take you along for the ride, even if just through pictures and tales.

30th Street Station Philadelphia Portraits

As we wrap up this adventure, I'm reminded of the importance of finding joy in the small moments, the power of a shared smile, and the beauty that surrounds us, often waiting just to be noticed. Here's to more explorations, more unexpected delights, and of course, to a holiday season filled with all the cheer and warmth we can muster. Happy holidays to each and every one of you—may your days be merry, bright, and filled with the kind of joy that only comes this time of year.

Happy Shooting, my friends!

Dreamy Cherry Blossom Sisters Shoot in Philadelphia

Capturing the magical bond between siblings amidst cherry blossoms in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. A dreamy, portrait session filled with love and laughter.

Behind The Lens: A Cherry Blossom Sisters Shoot in Philadelphia

As a photographer based outside of Philadelphia, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing all sorts of amazing moments around this beautiful city. But when I was approached to photograph a sisters' shoot surrounded by the blooming cherry blossoms at Fairmount Park, let’s just say I might have done a happy dance. (Don't judge me—it's a photographer thing.) This dreamy, pink-tinted shoot was everything I dreamed of and more, so I’m here to share a behind-the-scenes peek into the magic!

The Concept of the Sisters Shoot: Sibling Goals, Am I Right?

When the idea for this sisters' shoot came to me, I was so on board. There’s something special about capturing the bond between siblings, and I was excited to showcase each sister's unique personality in a dreamy, fine-art style session. With the cherry blossoms in full bloom, I knew the backdrop would be nothing short of breathtaking.

I wanted to make sure we caught both the candid moments of them interacting and the pure joy that comes from sibling love. Plus, I mean, who wouldn’t want their childhood memories immortalized next to these stunning pink blossoms? It’s like the definition of romantic spring goals.

We even styled the shoot with soft pink tones to match the pastel-hued cherry blossoms, ensuring everything was as dreamy as a fairytale. The lush green of Fairmount Park and those gorgeous pink trees made it feel like a scene straight out of a movie, minus the special effects. (Well, minus most of the special effects.)

Scouting the Perfect Spot at Fairmount Park: Nature's Hidden Gems

Finding the perfect location for a shoot is crucial—especially when the subject is a pair of sisters and the setting is a giant park with an insane amount of options. After a little wandering (okay, maybe a lot of wandering), I found the spot where the cherry blossoms were in full, Instagram-worthy bloom. The soft pink flowers were just begging to be in a shoot, and the combination of these flowers and the sisters in pink dresses? Absolutely picture-perfect.

As we got ready to shoot, I adjusted the lighting, moved a few branches (we photographers never touch the flowers, I swear), and made sure the frame was as dreamy as the sisters’ bond. Because in photography, it's all about making magic happen—whether it's with light, flowers, or a killer pair of dresses.

Capturing the Magic of Sibling Love: A Blossoming Bond

As the shoot progressed, I took full advantage of the gorgeous cherry blossoms and the playful chemistry between the sisters. Every smile, every little moment of them just being themselves made my job easier. Their pink dresses matched the surroundings way better than I had imagined. I was snapping shots left and right, making sure I captured everything from their giggles to the moments of sibling-seriousness (because, let’s be real, those happen, too).

Cherry blossoms gave us this magical atmosphere, and every picture radiated it. The sisters' personalities? They shone through in every frame—so much love and fun! Plus, golden hour was throwing in its two cents, casting this soft glow over the entire scene. It doesn’t get more photography-fairy-tale than that.

Golden Hour Magic: When the Light Turns Everything into Gold

If you don’t know what "golden hour" is, it’s the time just before sunset when the sun is casting the perfect soft, warm light over everything. It’s basically the photographer’s equivalent of winning the lottery. And lucky me—during the cherry blossom sisters shoot, golden hour was on my side. The sun made everything glow like it was dipped in honey (if that’s a thing), and I was able to play around with angles and shots to make sure we got that perfect shot.

A young girl joyfully twirling in a flowing pink couture dress amidst blooming cherry blossoms and daffodils in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. The soft petals and vibrant flowers create a dreamy backdrop, highlighting her playful and carefree spirit during this magical photoshoot.

I experimented with lighting and composition (because that’s what cool photographers do), and the result was pure magic. From soft, romantic moments to the final frames as the light faded, it was the kind of shoot that made me look at the camera and think, "Did I just capture the best thing ever?"

The Challenge for Busy Parents: Trust Me, I Get It

I know how crazy life can be as a parent. Finding time for a photoshoot, scheduling, wardrobe coordination—it’s a lot. But capturing those memories? Totally worth it. So, I do everything I can to make the process smooth and stress-free. I work with parents to customize each session to meet their needs, ensuring it’s as simple as possible for everyone involved. And hey, I might even be able to throw in a few jokes to lighten the mood. (No guarantees, though.)

The Rewarding Experience: A Magical Day with Magical People

Looking back, I can confidently say this cherry blossom sisters shoot was one for the books. Capturing the sibling bond in such a breathtaking setting made this shoot one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. From the glowing golden hour to the timeless cherry blossoms, it was a session that felt like an enchanted memory in the making.

The final images are filled with laughter, love, and all the things that make siblings (and photography) so special. As a photographer, there’s nothing quite like giving families memories that they’ll treasure forever. And for me, that’s the real magic.

Happy family photo shoot! Look how gorgeous they are!

The Importance of a Ten-Year Experience in Family Photography

The magic behind stellar family portraits often lies in the wealth of experience the photographer brings to the table. A decade-long journey in the field isn't just about honing skills to perfection. It's about mastering the art of capturing the light in your toddler's eyes, the laughter lines on grandma's face, and the subtle bond between siblings. Over ten years, a photographer evolves from just clicking pictures to weaving visual narratives that symbolize the unique essence of your family. It's this seasoned expertise that enables them to seize those fleeting moments of joy, love, and togetherness, transforming them into tangible memories you can revisit anytime. The right click can freeze time, and a photographer with a decade of experience knows just when to make that click.

The Advantages of Having a Local Photographer

There's something special about South Jersey, and no one captures that essence quite like a photographer who's been part of the community for years. With a keen understanding of the region's vibe and aesthetics, they can recommend fantastic locations that provide the perfect backdrop for your family portraits. Whether it's a well-known spot or a hidden gem only locals know about, these unique settings can add a distinctive touch to your photos. Furthermore, their familiarity with the local weather patterns and lighting conditions can be an essential factor during your photo shoot. They know exactly when the golden hour hits your favorite park, or how the fog rolls in on the beach, and they use this knowledge to capture your family in the most flattering light. This intimate understanding of the local environment, a perk exclusive to local photographers, can enhance the overall quality and appeal of your family portraits.

The Value of Building a Relationship with Your Photographer

Establishing a meaningful connection with your photographer is more than just a nicety; it can drastically impact the character of your family portraits. When a photographer truly understands your family, they're better equipped to portray your unique dynamics and individual personalities authentically in photographs. This bond also helps create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere during the shoot, especially important when photographing children who may initially be camera-shy. As the relationship develops over time, each photo session becomes more than just a scheduled appointment; it evolves into a cherished tradition. This trust and familiarity can help bring your family's stories and relationships to life in your portraits, enhancing their emotional depth and personal significance. The rapport with your photographer, thus, becomes an integral part of creating family portraits that resonate with warmth, love, and the authentic essence of who you are as a family.

The Role of Professional Equipment in Achieving High-Quality Images

There's more to capturing beautiful portraits than meets the eye. Beyond the experienced photographer, professional-grade equipment plays a crucial part in bringing your family's radiant smiles and intimate moments to life in the frames. The crispness of high-definition cameras, the clarity offered by top-of-the-line lenses, and the creative possibilities of lighting equipment and props can take your family photos from ordinary to extraordinary. A seasoned photographer knows how to wield these tools to amplify your family's unique charm, resulting in vivid, captivating images. With the help of professional equipment, every smile, every sparkle in the eye, and every tender touch are caught in stunning detail, making your family portraits something to truly treasure. This goes to show that the right tools in the hands of the right photographer can indeed turn your family portrait session into a masterpiece creation.

The Significance of Professional Post-Processing

The magic doesn't stop once the camera shutter clicks. Post-processing is a crucial stage in creating stunning family portraits. This step involves using advanced editing tools to meticulously fine-tune each image. The smallest details, such as a slight color enhancement or subtle flaw correction, can profoundly impact the final result. When handled by a seasoned professional, this editing process doesn't just correct - it elevates. It allows for an ordinary picture to transform into an extraordinary piece of art. This careful attention to detail ensures your portraits are not just visually appealing but capture the spirit and emotion of the moment. The post-processing stage reaffirms that every memory is worth preserving with the utmost care, making your family portraits a perfect representation of your precious moments.
