When Should You Book Your Maternity Photos? A Complete Planning Guide for Expecting Moms
One of the most common questions I get from expecting moms is simple but important: when should I book my maternity photos?
Pregnancy somehow feels long and fast at the same time. You spend months preparing, and then suddenly you realize there are only weeks left before your baby arrives. The truth is, maternity photos are best planned earlier than most people expect, especially if you want a specific season, location, or photographer.
The good news is there is a perfect window that helps you look and feel your best while still being comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.
The Best Time During Pregnancy for Maternity Photos
Most maternity sessions are ideally scheduled between 28 and 34 weeks.
At this stage:
Your belly is beautifully round and visible
You are usually still comfortable moving and posing
Swelling and fatigue are often more manageable
You still have time before baby arrives unexpectedly
Every pregnancy is different, though. Some moms feel amazing later, while others prefer to schedule earlier, especially with twins or high-risk pregnancies.
The most important thing is choosing a time when you feel confident and supported.
When to Book Your Photographer
Here’s the part many families don’t realize:
You should book your maternity session 2 to 4 months in advance whenever possible.
This matters because:
Popular seasons fill quickly (spring flowers and fall especially)
Weekend availability disappears fast
Custom wardrobe planning takes time
Weather backup dates may be needed
If you’re already past that window, don’t panic. Reach out anyway. Many photographers can still fit you in depending on availability.
What If You Don’t Feel Confident in Your Body?
This is the biggest hesitation I hear from moms.
You might feel:
Tired
Swollen
Different than your normal self
Unsure what to wear
And that’s completely normal.
The truth is, maternity photography isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about documenting one of the most meaningful seasons of your life. With flattering posing, beautiful light, and thoughtful styling, moms are often surprised by how confident and radiant they feel during their session.
Years later, these images become some of the most treasured memories — not because of how you looked, but because of what they represent.
Including Your Partner and Children
If this isn’t your first baby, maternity photos become even more meaningful.
Including siblings creates:
Emotional storytelling
Connection between children and baby before birth
Natural interaction instead of stiff posing
Memories your children will grow up seeing
Some of the most powerful images come from simple moments — a toddler hugging mom’s belly, a partner holding you close, laughter between family members as you prepare for life to change again.
What to Wear for Maternity Photos
Wardrobe plays a huge role in how maternity images feel.
Flowing dresses photograph beautifully because they:
Highlight your shape
Create movement
Catch light naturally outdoors
Feel elegant and timeless
Many clients choose pieces from my curated wardrobe collection so they don’t have to stress about shopping while pregnant. The goal is always comfort, confidence, and a cohesive look for the entire family.
Indoor vs Outdoor Maternity Sessions
Both options can be beautiful.
Outdoor sessions offer:
Natural light and movement
Seasonal scenery
Soft, dreamy atmosphere
Space for children to play naturally
Studio sessions offer:
Controlled lighting
Privacy
Clean editorial backgrounds
Weather independence
Choosing the right environment depends on your personal style and vision.
Why Maternity Photos Matter More Than You Think
Pregnancy is temporary.
This chapter passes quickly.
Many moms tell me they almost skipped maternity photos because life felt busy or overwhelming. But after their session, they’re grateful they made the time.
These images become part of your child’s story too — proof of how loved they were before they were even born.
