A Fun, Chaotic, Very Philadelphia Family Photoshoot on Broad Street

Philadelphia sessions always end up feeling a little unpredictable in the best possible way. One second we’re calmly walking down Broad Street pretending to be elegant and editorial… the next second there’s a SEPTA bus flying by, someone yelling out a car window, music blasting from somewhere, and a toddler dramatically refusing to continue unless bribed with snacks.

Honestly? That’s why I love photographing families in the city.

Because Philadelphia isn’t supposed to feel perfectly polished. It feels alive.

And Broad Street especially has this energy to it that somehow makes sessions feel both chaotic and cinematic at the same time.

Why Broad Street Is One of My Favorite Spots in Philadelphia

There’s just always something happening.

You have the massive City Hall views, the movement of traffic, people walking everywhere, lights reflecting off buildings, random street musicians, food carts, tourists trying to figure out where they’re going, and somehow in the middle of all that… we’re creating these beautiful family photos that feel natural instead of overly posed.

That’s the thing about Philadelphia sessions. They don’t feel stiff.

Kids can move. Parents can laugh. Teenagers usually stop giving me the “I don’t want to be here” face after about ten minutes because the city itself keeps things interesting.

I’m constantly moving during sessions on Broad Street because every direction looks different. One corner gives clean editorial city vibes, another gives historic Philadelphia textures, and then suddenly the sunset starts bouncing off the buildings and everything turns gold for about fifteen minutes before the city goes chaotic again.

Which honestly feels very on brand for Philadelphia.

The Best Part of City Sessions? Nobody Has to Sit Still

I think parents panic before sessions because they picture standing in one spot smiling at the camera for an hour.

Absolutely not.

Half the time we’re walking, joking around, dodging traffic lights, fixing dresses because the wind decided to attack everyone at once, or laughing because somebody almost stepped directly into a puddle while trying to look graceful.

The movement is what makes the photos feel real.

Some of my favorite moments during Philadelphia family sessions happen completely in-between poses:

  • kids swinging their parents’ arms while crossing the street

  • siblings laughing at absolutely nothing

  • a little girl twirling in the middle of the sidewalk because she suddenly feels like a movie character

  • parents looking at each other like “this is complete chaos” while secretly having fun

That’s the stuff people actually remember.

Philadelphia Sessions Feel Different Than Park Sessions

I love flower fields and beaches. Obviously. But city sessions have a totally different personality.

Philadelphia gives you texture. Motion. Noise. Energy.

Broad Street especially feels bold and timeless at the same time. One minute your gallery looks high-end and editorial, the next image feels playful and completely candid.

And weirdly enough, kids usually do better in the city because there’s constantly something new catching their attention.

Also, nobody in Philadelphia cares that you’re taking photos.

Which helps.

People walk around sessions constantly. Someone always yells “you guys look great!” at least once. There’s usually a guy blasting music nearby. Occasionally there’s a motorcycle revving dramatically for absolutely no reason.

It’s all part of the experience.

What to Wear for a Broad Street Session

This is one of my favorite locations for dresses with movement because the city wind does half my job for me.

Neutral colors, black, soft creams, muted blues, warm earth tones — all photograph beautifully against the architecture and city light.

And honestly, Philadelphia can handle a little fashion.

Why I Love Photographing Families in Philadelphia

Every session feels different.

No two galleries ever look the same because the city changes constantly depending on the light, the crowds, the season, and whatever random Philadelphia chaos is happening that day.

And somehow in the middle of all of it, we create photos that still feel emotional and connected.

Not overly posed. Not fake. Not stiff.

Just your family existing together in one of the coolest cities on the East Coast.

And honestly? That’s usually where the magic happens.
