When Is the Best Time to Book Spring Flower Photos in New Jersey?

Spring portrait season is a little dramatic.

One minute everything looks dead and depressing, and the next? The trees are blooming, the tulips are showing off, and your social media feed is suddenly full of flower fields and children looking like they belong in a storybook.

And every year, without fail, my inbox starts filling up with the same question:

From cherry blossoms and tulip fields to peonies and wildflowers, spring portrait season in New Jersey moves fast and gives families some of the most beautiful natural backdrops of the year.

“Is it too early to book spring photos?”

Short answer?
Honestly… if you’re asking, you’re probably right on time.

Maybe even a little late.

That’s the thing about spring in New Jersey. It does what it wants.

Flowers bloom early. Then late. Then all at once. Then it rains for six days straight and everybody panics.

Spring portrait sessions don’t have to look the same for everyone. Peach orchards in New Jersey make space for personality too—whether that means bringing a pet, celebrating a milestone, or just documenting a season of growing up.

But it’s also one of the most beautiful times of year for family and children’s portraits.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a spring session with a South Jersey family photographer or Philadelphia family photographer, here’s how the season usually unfolds.

Cherry Blossoms (Late March–Early April)

Cherry blossoms are the sprinters of spring.

They show up, look magical for about five minutes, and then drop their petals all over the ground like they never even existed.

Cherry blossom season in New Jersey is short, which makes it one of the most sought-after times for spring children’s portraits—especially for those playful, movement-filled moments.

They are stunning for soft, dreamy family photos and children’s portraits, especially if you love romantic pastels and that delicate fine art look.

Cherry blossom season lines up beautifully with spring First Holy Communion portraits, giving families in New Jersey a soft, timeless backdrop for such an important milestone.

But timing matters.

Miss the window, and suddenly you’re standing under green trees wondering where all the magic went.

Tulip Fields (Mid-April)

Tulips are organized chaos.

Rows of color, structured beauty, and one of the most vibrant backdrops for spring family photography in New Jersey.

Tulip sessions are perfect if you want color, texture, and that full spring feeling.

And yes… they’re popular for a reason.

Tulip fields at sunset create some of the most colorful spring portraits in New Jersey—especially for children, where the golden light and rows of blooms add so much depth and color.

TULIPS ARE gorgeous.

And because everybody waits until the last minute and then messages me like:

"Do you have anything this weekend?"

Sometimes yes.

Usually… not so much.

Peony Season (Mid-May)

Peonies are the luxury flower of spring.

Big, romantic, dramatic.

Basically the overachiever of the flower world.

Peony sessions are one of my favorite options for children and motherhood portraits because they photograph beautifully and feel timeless.

Soft texture, giant blooms, beautiful movement.

It’s one of those setups that feels expensive before you even edit it.

Wildflowers (Late May into Summer)

Wildflowers are where spring starts loosening its grip and summer starts peeking in.

They’re less polished, more playful, and honestly perfect for kids.

More movement. More freedom. Less pressure.

Wildflower sessions tend to feel effortless—which, if you’ve ever tried dressing and getting children out the door, is a beautiful lie we all appreciate.

So… When Should You Book?

If you know you want spring photos?

Book in winter.

I know that sounds aggressive.

But flower seasons move fast, weather shifts, and prime evening spots go quickly.

Especially if you’re looking for:

  • Family portraits

  • Motherhood sessions

  • Children’s fine art portraits

  • Sibling sessions

  • Maternity portraits

Waiting until flowers bloom to start looking is kind of like deciding to book beach week when you’re already packing the car.

Possible?

Maybe.

Stressful?

Absolutely.

Why Spring Sessions Are Worth It

Spring feels alive.

Everything is waking up.

Kids are happier outside, the weather is softer, and the colors are unreal.

And unlike studio sessions, outdoor spring sessions give kids room to move, explore, and actually enjoy themselves—which usually leads to the images parents love most.

The real smiles.

The little in-between moments.

The chaos you’ll miss one day.

That’s always the part worth remembering.

If you’re looking for a South Jersey family photographer, NJ family photographer, or Philadelphia family photographer for spring flower portraits, this is the season to start planning now—not when everybody else realizes the flowers are blooming.

Because flowers don’t wait.

And neither does childhood.
