Why Peony Season Is My Favorite Time to Photograph Families in South Jersey

There’s a very short window each year where everything feels softer.

The light lingers a little longer, the air is warmer but not heavy, and the peony fields quietly bloom into something that doesn’t feel like South Jersey at all.

For me, this is the season I look forward to most.

A Season That Feels Different

Peony season isn’t loud or overwhelming.

It’s subtle.

The colors are soft—blush, ivory, pale pink—and the blooms themselves feel almost weightless. When the light hits them just right, everything takes on this dreamy, glowing quality that’s hard to recreate any other time of year.

It’s not just about the flowers.
It’s about the feeling the entire environment creates.

Why It Works So Beautifully for Families

There’s a natural ease that happens during peony sessions.

Children don’t feel restricted—they move, twirl, explore.
Parents relax into the moment instead of worrying about posing.

And because the setting is so soft and open, everything feels:

  • unforced

  • connected

  • and genuine

The result is imagery that doesn’t feel overly styled or staged, but still looks elevated and timeless.

The Light, the Movement, the Emotion

If I had to describe peony sessions in three things, it would be this:

Light. Movement. Emotion.

The light is warm and diffused, especially in the evening.
The dresses move naturally through the fields.
And the emotion—the connection between families—is what makes each session completely unique.

No two sessions ever feel the same.

A Personal Favorite Year After Year

I’ve been photographing in peony fields for years, and it never feels repetitive.

Every season is a little different.
Every bloom comes and goes quickly.
And every family brings something new to the space.

There’s something about knowing how short this season is that makes it feel even more meaningful.

A Short and Beautiful Window

Peonies in South Jersey typically bloom for just a few weeks:
👉 late May through early June

It’s fleeting, which is part of what makes it so special.

You don’t get months to plan—you get a moment.

These sessions take place on a private flower field and are offered for a limited time each year.

If you’ve ever wanted portraits that feel soft, natural, and a little bit dreamlike, peony season is one of the most beautiful times to do it.
