When Broadway Meets History: A Memorable Day at Eastern State Penitentiary

On a crisp autumn morning, I received an unexpected email from a couple, expressing their interest in hiring Shooting Star Photography LLC. Their message was filled with excitement as they shared their plans to visit the historic Eastern State Penitentiary and capture their first-day adventure together.

These gentlemen are avid lovers of all things Broadway and musicals, were drawn to the Penitentiary's eerie charm, knowing it would provide a unique backdrop for their photo session. Their shared passion for both history and performing arts made it clear that this day would be nothing short of extraordinary.

As their designated photographer, I arrived at Eastern State Penitentiary, ready to capture the essence of their love story against the backdrop of crumbling cellblocks and haunting walls. They playfully reenacted scenes from their favorite musicals, bringing theatrical life to each desolate cell and abandoned corridor.

Their love for Broadway and musicals was omnipresent throughout our session. From serenading each other with show tunes to posing with Broadway-themed props they had brought, Sophie and Michael proved that love can thrive even in the most unexpected settings.
As the sun began to set and cast a warm, golden glow across the Penitentiary's courtyard, I captured the last few shots. Thier enchanting journey had taken them from the vibrant world of Broadway to the chilling embrace of history, blending these disparate elements into an unforgettable experience.

When I was contacted by these two dapper gentlemen, I couldn't refuse!  I don't do engagement photography anymore, but I knew this would be something fun and special.  I wanted to capture the fun, the excitement and the love these two had for each other! I got to know a little about themselves prior to the shoot and their energy is something I really wanted to capture.We set out for Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia on a brisk Saturday morning.  

I did not know that he was going to propose! What a wonderful surprise this was and what an incredible location!

A permit is required, however... it really is a lovely setting for photography... despite its past usage. The colors and the light make this place come alive. As we were there, a surprise engagement ensued. As you can see the shock on his face! Absolutely adorable! The whole room was shedding a tear!

  We then set off to finalize our engagement shoot! And boy did we have flipping blast!!! I really want to thank these guys for allowing me to capture these beautiful moments for them! I know they will be living happily ever after!!!

Miracle on 13th Street Philadelphia Family Photo Shoot

Shooting Star Photography LLC had the honor of capturing a heartwarming family photo shoot on the iconic 13th Street in Philadelphia. The session was nothing short of a miracle as the family came together after years of living in different cities.

The neutral backdrop of the urban street provided the perfect canvas to showcase the genuine love and connection between the family members. Our experienced photographers skillfully captured the laughter, embraces, and joyful tears that filled the air during the session.

Wow! I can't believe it's been a few months since I even updated this blog here. It has been SUPER DUPER LOOPER BUSY.  That's why. We're having so much fun this year! Lots of great new locations, some new and old faces.. lots of neat themes, dresses the whole nine! We're now heading into our beach season.  Beach is one of my favorite things to capture and am fortunate to live by a beach that is 20 minutes from my own house!  We're also doing some mermaid sessions this year and have teamed up with a local photographer out of Lancaster, Pa.

(CHECK HER OUT) She is plain amazing and am fortunate enough to call her one of my best buddies!! Another of my favorites from this session.. wearing an Anna Triant couture dress!!  As the season progresses, we head into doing more family-type more portraits.  I figured I would start off with this sweet little family that I was fortunate enough to photograph back in December.  

Yep, that's how far I am behind in getting sessions up on here!  I love capturing the essence and personality of families and all members! We usually have a great time! Although this one was tough. I believe it was under 20 degrees out, haha. You wouldn't really know it by the look of how they are posing, but trust me there were shivers galore going on here!We set off  to our journey... in City of Brotherly LOVE, in Philly and it was probably one of the COLDEST sessions to date.  This is an awesome street around Christmas season (generally, after Thanksgiving) as there are Christmas lights everywhere and I mean everywhere.

However, it was so cold we kind of made this a VERY VERY VERY quick session as our plan was to stay near sunset/dusk when they came on.  The kids shown here,  I have to say... were tremendous troopers as they were photographed without their jackets off.  My very own assistant got frost bite from this day and had to sit out of this session.  

Me... PFFFFT I laugh at the cold and hot temperatures. I love photography so much that I could do this every hour of every day!!! Excited for our upcoming Hippy Van/Ice Cream Shoot, Peonies , Mermaid and Beach sessions in South Jersey!  All have been sold out!  It's going to be an AWESOME Summer! I'm more excited on my newest beach spot and will show on an upcoming blog... no more crazy shore traffic!

Beach Photography in Ocean City!

Laughing and having fun on the Ocean City, New Jersey beach!

Dreaming of your next year’s summer vacation in Ocean City, NJ already? Ocean city is one of our favorite New Jersey destination shore towns. Great boardwalks, food, family friendly atmosphere, semi-private and clean beaches. Your session with us (Shooting Star). The list goes on as to why Ocean City, NJ is a great beach location choice for your photography needs.

One of my favorite spots in Ocean City is the fishing pier as it offers a medley of cool backdrops.

Check out these two ladies who we photographed. I bought a little “beach tent” and decorated it with some string lights. We put out rainbow colored starfish, linen fabric draped over the frame and a nice magical lantern for that extra bit of pop needed for your portraits. Not to mention I added in some fun as these girls are laughing their hineys off! Hey, there’s nothing like a kid enjoying the beach. Am I right?

Our photographs truly shine when it comes to beach photography. It's one of the many types of sessions that I take the utmost pride in.  I LOVE the Jersey shore and the Delaware Bay sunsets.  It's truly the best time to be in New Jersey and the Jersey shore during the summer months.  Especially, during the week, as it's not too busy.It's no wonder that folks come from all over the East Coast to enjoy a beautiful beach vacation in our backyard. 

This year, Ellie Belly Photography (out of Lancaster, PA) and I are teaming up to do mermaid sessions. These sessions are sold out.  We are doing two dates together and am very excited to be working with her as she's not only a great friend, but an even more excellent artist. All of our beach sessions are sold out this year.  I am very excited to do these and to offer some top of the line clothing pieces for these sessions.  I can't wait to post and show you what we will be creating. I love the pastel colors of the beach and that beautiful twilight/sunset light of the summer.

If you do wear our offerings...

• I send out a questionnaire to all customers, even to special/mini sessions. It helps me to get to know you and your family a little better. I like capturing personality of people and this helps me to get to know my clients.

• This questionnaire is also pretty awesome because YOU can tell me what you expect to get out of your session.

• I ask for sizes.

• I often times can email a client what I am thinking of having their child wearing.  If not the case, I bring a whole truckload of dresses to choose from based around the theme and setting.

HOW TO ARRIVE TO YOUR STYLIZED SESSION

• I do recommend a very fresh-faced look. NO makeup, well-moisturized skin. Lipgloss or chapstick to keep lips moist and from cracking during our session.

• In terms of hair, I like long and loose curls. Nothing crazy or dramatic. I honestly love capturing kids for who they really are and I prefer a more natural approach. No long hair, no problem. We love short hair, too! Simple and fresh cut is always a plus about a week before your session.I can provide headpieces that will coordinate with your dresses. Just ask!

• I do suggest leggings if it is cold out. We can generally hide them under the dresses.  I do provide shawls or furs for extra comfort during the cold winter months.

• Shoe choices...  I prefer neutrals.. silver, gold, black, brown, taupe.  They will go with anything and not be too distractive of an element in your photographs.

• Try and wear neutral undergarments so that you aren't having any crazy patterns or colors bleed through your clothing. IE. No black bras with a white tshirt... Unless, you are a rebel.. Then rock it.

 As you see above, a very simple and easy preparation guide. I provide a wardrobe tent when on location for privacy in getting changed. I truly want my customers to have a seamless experience from start to finish. I will pretty much take care of everything. Ah... those days of summer. I honestly can't wait for them! I cannot stand the cold this time of year. It's pretty dreadful out there. Isn't it? I tend to not like shooting in the forest, this time of year, because the leaves are dead. So you will most likely see me shooting in an urban setting... which I love and I want to do more.Another image of the day!

This image of the day is brought to you by the summer... There is a meadow right down the street from me and it tends to produce a lot of varieties of wildflowers depending on the month.  I adore it.I dressed this little girl up in a pretty little pink  Anna Triant dress and got her twirling and dancing in the meadow here and I got to capture this sweet little moment! I wanted to keep it light and airy and a little minty and I think I succeeded!!

Who doesn't like flowers right? I can't wait to go back in the spring when everything is blooming again! Ahh! It's truly heavenly!  Who doesn't like flowers? Well, I guess if you are allergic to them.. I truly love South Jersey! I can usually find a neat spot around every corner!  Just like this guy here!Reach out any time if you have any questions!
