Every year, it seems more and more handmade designers are popping up! Mostly, from the United States, but you see people from all over the globe! I LOVE IT! I love unique hand made items. You don't have to pay an arm and a leg to own a one-of -a -kind dress! Below, I created a list of new designers to watch out for this 2018 year! They are all handmade, beautifully crafted items. Sometimes, only one unique piece is sold in a set. Sometimes, a few in each size. However, this list is full of funky, vintage and different looks! Designs from the newest couture designer, vintage pieces and everything in between! For myself, I am loving more and more vintage items in my work.  I do still enjoy utilizing couture dresses, but it's nice to switch things up from time to time! !This is from one of my favorite designers from last year! Holy moly, what a year it's been! It has truly been an incredible photography journey for Shooting Star Photography LLC. From capturing beautiful family moments to the pure innocence of newborn babies, our lens has seen it all here in the heart of New Jersey.

The joy of freezing those timeless moments for families to cherish forever, the heartwarming smiles, and the genuine emotions captured through our lenses have made this year utterly unforgettable. Every session has been a unique adventure, showcasing the love, connection, and joy that families share.

We've had the honor of witnessing the special bond between parents and their newborns, preserving their earliest moments in stunning photographs. There's something truly magical about capturing the purity and innocence of these precious little ones, and it's an experience that continues to fill our hearts with joy.
As we look back on this fantastic journey, we're reminded of the countless priceless memories we've been trusted to preserve. The trust placed in our hands to capture these fleeting moments is a responsibility we hold dear, and we're incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do what we love.

As we turn the page to a new year, we carry with us the lessons learned, the memories made, and the excitement to continue this incredible journey. Thank you to all the families and little ones who have allowed us to be a part of their story. Here's to more beautiful moments and unforgettable experiences in the year to come!

It has been an INSANE last month! I have worked every single day except for today (which was rained out) and another day that I took off this month. I have to say that I am truly grateful for all of it, as it has been an absolute BLAST capturing the fall foliage in our stunning South Jersey backyard!!!  Oh and I'm very exhausted, but as I like to say... "I'll sleep when I'm dead."A few new things and changes! We are reevaluating our pricing list for next year. We will be attending a few workshops within the next few weeks and feel our work is worth a bit of an increase!  Sorry, guys! It is a business after all!  I know bah humbug, right?

A second thing is that I've been enjoying capturing families and couples more and more! Practically every single day I am out and about capturing memories for families and the kids seem to have a blast by the end of the session! This means a lot!I'm still sending out my thank you cards, but a little bit behind as well as a little behind on the editing, but I am working hard! Trust me!I've also hired an assistant to come out on my shoots since I've been so busy! I really have to say that it has totally been worth it, having that extra set of hands. Plus, it's great security. I can leave my gear bag with my assistant, my assistant can help me get folks in order with the shoot... and also, it's a big ice breaker...

As my assistant is my mom!  Yep, good ol' mom. I do pay her to be with me by my side, but her assistance has helped me two-fold and I am forever grateful for that! Also, another good news. We will be having our Christmas mini sessions on November 28th. There is already a wait list for this, so it will go out fast. I'm receiving emails daily. This will be it for the rest of the year as I need a little break and want to study up, take workshops and rest up for what I have planned to do next year!

Second, I was recently among my peers among some of the best photographers in the world. I am a bit flabbergasted and shocked to be honest with you, but my peers really seem to love the little girl with the leaves.  This has been a request with every photo session since that day. It's actually a lot of fun to do! I see throwing snowflakes in the near future!

Here's the link if you wanted to check it out for yourself!https://www.facebook.com/Shootingstarsouthjersey/posts/562487303916058I have two maternity sessions lined up for this week and weekend and it's my favorite thing to capture so I'm very excited about that.

All in all it's been a great year and I feel really blessed to wake up every single day and do something I love to do. That is something special right there!Well... I guess I'll see you around South Jersey! I'm heading off to go edit! I have been traveling from Atlantic County to Burlington County and everything in between lately.

However, I wouldn't change it for the world!

Happy Shooting, my friends!-Dee

The Shooting Star Grounds in Woodstown, NJ!

It doesn't matter what time of day it is... the light is ALWAYS gorgeous here at our Shooting Star South Jersey grounds!!! We get filtered sunlight with the 40 or so trees on the property. You can shoot in high afternoon sun and it still will be perfect. It's pretty crazy, but is one of the reasons we purchased our property.I was born and raised in Camden County until I was fourteen and spent my youth exploring the Delaware River, then onto Burlington County where I honestly thought all there was to do was to play in cornfields (boy, has a lot of development occurred since then... Mt. Laurel has been built up quite a bit!)

Let me tell you about my best friend... two babies that almost look alike! So funny!

In my adult years, I spent about 6-7 years living in PA.. .then back to Burlington County, then Atlantic County, and now currently Salem County.  I think this is one of the reasons I know South Jersey so well. I've honestly lived everywhere. When my son was born, I set out to explore South Jersey even more and this is when I truly feel in love with it. I never ever wanted to leave ever again. I have traveled all of the world, but there's nothing like being back HOME.  It's pretty incredible how you can be in the mountains, the beach, the Pine Barrens, the city, even the Big Apple (NYC) within a 1-2 hour time frame.

With all this exploring, I started a traveling blog on places to see in South Jersey. That blew up like crazy (and yes, I need to get back at it). I then went on to write and published two books! It was through my love of traveling and posting it to the blog, when I fell in love with photography. I started to get serious into it... I learned my camera. Learned to shoot in manual. Learned framing and all about shooting at certain times of day.  It wasn't until my daughter was born that I decided to try photographing people... and boy that was a HUGE switch. It's totally different than landscape photography!

Photography Journey

It's like starting all over again, but that's what is fun about this field... YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING :)It was through my travels in South Jersey, that I discovered Salem County.  I wrote a book on the beautiful county and from then on.. I wanted to live here.  After searching numerous homes, and actually had a contract on another residence, that we found our dream home. The minute I saw my backyard, I had to have this house!  We put an offer that night and it was accepted! And so here we are!  Terraced gardens, the changing and colors of the seasons, the consistent sun-filled and shaded stunning light. The stream that runs along our property. It's truly a dream come true.Since I live here, I know when the sun is best and have photographed here out of any other location. I'm able to push it's limits. Now, if the garden and stream isn't enough...  I have an alleyway across the street, which has been some of my greatest shots to date, I live on a dead end street and the sun sets at the end of the street... And in 1/4 mile in opposite directions from one another I have a park with a stream, meadow, beautiful bridge and another garden... the other direction a gorgeous meadow and cornfields. It's truly the best location and I feel BLESSED that I can offer these places to my customers!!

So, if you ever want a private garden, a stream, an alley and meadow for your photographs and also a private location... Well, I'm your girl!As you see, just utilizing my property can offer so much! Light can make or break a photo and we have gorgeous light here

!You want to hear something pretty funny? About HALF, yes HALF, of the photographs in the portfolio are taken in and around the studio grounds!!!

Happy Shooting, South Jersey!

Don't Give Up Photography

Don't Give Up Photography

Fuel Your Passion: Don't Give Up on Photography!

Hey there, aspiring photographer! I know that the journey through the world of photography can sometimes feel like an uphill battle, with numerous challenges and roadblocks along the way. But don't let those setbacks dull your shine or dim your passion!

You have a unique perspective: Photography is an art form that allows you to capture the essence of a moment in time, enabling you to express your creativity and vision in ways that words cannot. Remember, your perspective is one-of-a-kind! Don't let self-doubt overshadow your ability to share your view of the world with others.

Embrace failure as a stepping stone: It's no secret that success often walks hand in hand with failure. Every great photographer has encountered countless mistakes and disappointments, only to come out stronger on the other side. Embrace those failures as valuable learning opportunities and stepping stones towards your growth and development as an artist.

Celebrate your progress: Take a moment to reflect on how far you've come. Photography is a journey, a continuous process of improvement. Think back to those early days when your photographs were still a work in progress. Celebrate your progress and acknowledge the skills you've acquired along the way. Remember, every great photographer started somewhere.

Seek inspiration and learn continuously: Photography is a craft that constantly evolves. Stay curious and hungry for knowledge. Seek inspiration from prominent photographers, explore different genres, experiment with new techniques, and never stop learning. The world is your classroom, and every photo you take is an opportunity to refine your skills.

Embrace patience: Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your photography career. Success rarely comes overnight, and it requires patience and perseverance. Keep practicing, keep learning, and keep pushing yourself even when things get tough. Trust the process, because your dedication and hard work will pay off.

Surround yourself with a supportive community: Photography can be a solitary pursuit at times, but having a supportive community of fellow photographers can make all the difference. Engage with like-minded individuals, join photography clubs or online communities, and seek constructive feedback. Remember, iron sharpens iron, and surrounding yourself with passionate individuals will push you towards excellence.

Capture moments that matter: Lastly, don't forget the power that photography holds. Your photographs can freeze a moment in time, evoke emotions, and tell meaningful stories. Whether you're capturing an incredible sunset, a candid moment shared between loved ones, or the extraordinary beauty in the most ordinary things, your work has the potential to touch hearts and inspire others.
So, don't give up on photography! Fuel your passion, embrace the challenges, and keep capturing the world through your unique lens. Remember, the beauty of photography lies not just in the final image, but in the journey itself. Keep chasing your dreams, and let your love for this art form drive you towards greatness!

You've got this! Now go out there and show the world what you're capable of!
P.S. Remember to always respect copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions when sharing or publishing your work.

Raggedy Ann baby. Take on my Woodstown, NJ property. I really don’t know what I was thinking here.

I write this blog for mainly other photographers (but I do write for clients from time to time) and I like to share  my insight sometimes into this crazy field... So here it goes because I know a lot of others go through, or are currently going through, what I'm about to write below. There's a time when a lot of photographers are faced with a difficult decision... and it's no matter if you have been in this industry for 20 years, or are a freshy (as photographers like to call, new photographers).  Guess what? I'm a freshy and quite proud of that fact!  I haven't even been in business for a year. It's only been 6 months since I became a legal business..

With photography, You are will eventually want to give up. Throw in that fluffy soft towel. Kick the curb...These are the particulars of emotions and thoughts that you may go through at any given moment...You will want to sell all your gear.

You will want to give up because you aren't booking enough sessions or any sessions. You will want to give up because you are facing frustration, whether it be you seeing others out there that are making a successful career out of this and they are putting out some incredible work (you have to admit, there is a TON of talent out there)... And you will feel deflated because of this.Jealousy.  Yup, you will at the receiving and other end at some point... it is a given!Inadequacy. You can't find "your style" or are having trouble "finding it."Not good enough.Your gear isn't good enough. You don't have enough props. You don't have a studio

.You hate editing because it takes up virtually your entire life. You're new and don't have the education.

You have trouble editing something, or see things in your head in how you want your image to look like  and it's just not coming out the way you want it to... not even close. You may even have a bad customer experience and it just left a bad taste in your mouth and you never want to be in that particular type of situation ever again....  because it was a nightmare.Whatever the reason is for you giving up... Don't.  Don't do it.When you do this, you allow others to win, to see you fail, to be laughed at, and by giving up it destroys your passion and your soul. I find photography to be that for me.. my passion and my soul.I'm learning some things along my journey and yes, at times I have wanted to give up. Just the other day, I felt that I lost my passion. That it was starting to feel like a chore. Not something of my soul, as it has been this entire journey from the start... I felt my soul was being eaten alive or chipped away at the jagged surface.

I've been taking  on too many jobs and it has taken me away from spending valuable time with my husband and two young and beautiful children.Hang on here.. I am getting somewhere with all of this..Everyone has been where you are at this particular moment. Every photographer, has wanted to give up at some point in their career.. and they are lying if they haven't.

The one key advice you need to do (if you start to feel this way.)Make friends with other photographers. I think the most valuable asset I have had in this business are my cohorts. Yup, other photographers. I have many photographer friends that have gone, or will be going through the same trials and tribulations... ups and downs as we all will eventually go through.  They are my mentors. They are my true guiding light.  My true supporters of my craft and have been my light at the end of this crazy tunnel. Through all this... And guess what?  That friendship is mutual.  I am also here for them. I have made some really wonderful and life-lasting friendships in this business with photographers of all levels and I honestly believe I'd have given in the towel if I did not have them in my life.

Where to find these friend photographers? Anywhere. Honestly. Look to someone you admire in your area. I know some photographers have egos the size of Texas, but honestly about 95% don't.  Reach out! Join a local club!  That's always a great place to meet folks!  I bet you meetup.com has a ton of groups in your area too. There are also local PPA chapters usually by state!

Yup, I am a member of PPA... and will be joining my local chapter soon. What has actually worked for my personal experience is facebook groups. Yup, good ol' facebook.  I've gotten to meet local folks and folks from all over the country and world... and I've even gotten to meet some of these folks in person and some I will be meeting soon!  They are my rock!So... I told you that I wanted to give up the other day because I felt overwhelmed and was extremely exhausted and taking too much on... I talked to my husband and he obviously thought I was nuts because he knows I love photography with my life and that he said it would be talent wasted, but I was actually serious.  Well, I went with this to my friends.  They gave me that good kick in the rear that I really needed!

My hiney has been hurting ever since! Ouchie Wowie!  But honestly that's what friends are for.  And I wouldn't want it anyway! Now, my passion has been sparked, yet again.. and it has been all because of them! I have my well-thought out plan and vision for what's ahead and what I can do here, in the present!  Woo hoo! Now, bring it on! I'm ready for it! For now... but will know I'll once again need that nice kick in the future... Don't we all?

Happy Shooting, my friends!

Dee

Dear Starting Out Photographer

Dear Starting Out Photographer,

Wow, you have a long road ahead of you. You really have no clue what lies ahead of you, do you? You think you do... but you don't. You have a passion for this, but have so much you need to learn. You think you are the bomb dot com right now, but as you get further in this game you finally wake up like a brick smacked you right in the face and realize... you have so much to learn. This takes you back and at this time... you'll want to give up. Sell your equipment and just give all your hard work up.You are probably confused on what to charge right now as you're trying to get your name out there.

Advice for the new and budding photographer. Hang in there.

Some of my first work.

My kids.

The angles were real.

More “fun angles.”

Some hate mail that I have received. I can post this publicly as this was posted to the blog here publicly. This was an actual supposed FRIEND who I worked with in the past (that we found who was with a reverse IP search. He is a photographer himself.

I often times look back and see how far I've truly come in such a short amount of time. This is a post I've been wanting to write for a few weeks now and now I have the kahunas to finally write it.  If I were to turn back time... this would be some of the things I would want to tell myself.I started taking photos of friends and family on October 11, 2014. At this time, I only collected "donations."  Some would donate and others weren't as keen to donating, but it was about growing, learning and building a portfolio. The whole experience!

In February of this year, I started out legally, incorporated my business, insurance, sales tax.. the whole nine.  I am really new to this game... However, I have grown tremendously and still learning. Most folks hire me for my unique locations and style here in South Jersey... They like my customer service and how I make this process... easy peasy..I have learned a lot and have gained a ton of knowledge in a short time... and I look forward to learning and growing more!  However, here is a letter that some new folks in the game may find useful!

These were my first "portraits" in regards to photography.. Go ahead and laugh!  Remember, we all have to start somewhere!  I thought I could share with you!

You'll hear from other photographers that you'll need to go over your cost of doing business, but you can't get one client through the door... whether you charge a lot or charge very little. You're going to want to pull your hair out at this time, as this is the most frustrating aspect to the game. You are going to start to realize, at this time, that this is a very cutthroat industry.  It's very dog eat dog. There are HUGE EGOS.

You'll learn you're all alone in this and that's okay... after all, it is your business after all. You'll get messages that your work sucks, you're going to be laughed at by other photographers in regards to your work, and these folks will be very mean. You may cry, get defensive, and get angry.

I'm just telling you it's going to be okay. You're going to learn to develop a tough skin.  Trust me. I've been there. Some of their advice you will learn from, others you won't... and that's again.. Please take it with a grain of salt. You will second guess your own style.. as others will not agree with it.. and it will put you on a tale spin further down the rabbit hole and you'll be lost even further.

You'll be ridiculed by others about your equipment and that it "isn't good enough" I started out with a NEX-6 and then an A6000, since then I have upgraded to a full frame "professional camera", but that's what I had to work with at the time... They'll tell you this equipment won't do the job. You'll see all the latest and greatest gear out there... and want it all.. New actions and presets (which you'll soon realize are a waste of money), new lenses, a new camera body, off camera flash, studio equipment and backdrops, floordrops, reflectors.. and you will think to yourself... oh, I got to have those.

But guess what? You really don't need most of these.  You'll soon learn it's about using what you've got and using it to the max. Learning your equipment as if it is an extension of yourself.Guess what? No matter how far you'll MAKE IT... even the big names get ridiculed! Just suck it up and develop your tough guy/gal skin!  You will need it new photographer! You'll learn that it isn't just a click of the shutter...

You'll be thrown into marketing and the business side of things. There will be contracts and following up and designing sets... learning customer service.  Creating, designing and maintaining your website for SEO purposes.. (that's cutthroat in itself), Facebook, client calls and consults, buying props.. maintaining equipment, purchasing equipment, editing software, backing up, online galleries.. deciding where you want to order your prints from... Yes, it starts to get overwhelming!

You'll soon realize that this little part time gig you have going for yourself, is more a full-time gig and it can start to take up a majority of your day! You'll see other new folks soaring and their business just taking flight.  This will upset you because you know you can create just as good of work and you'll see others who have been in the business for years and still have a lot of improving to do.  It doesn't matter!!!!  You'll learn it doesn't matter and just focus on yourself!

Eventually, you are going to realize... none of the above matters and to do your own thing. You'll realize that everyone has a style... some folks love clean edits.. some folks like crazy edits and colors...

As you continue and push ahead, you will see folks are now hiring you and respect you for your work.. Your creativity will start to come back and you will find your passion again. This is the time you will start to flourish.  I promise! This is when you will know your true worth and what to price yourself at.

This is when you will build your confidence and you'll learn to tune out most other photographers. You'll be doing you.. the way it was suppose to be all along!  Get out there and do you! It's time! You CAN do this! Trust me!

My moment was a few months back, I stopped listening to what others told me.. I continued on to learn and educate myself. I started to surround myself with local photographers who have the same values and hold the same values. This is when I found my happiness in this again.  After I started doing me, is when other photographers would email or message me in regards to locations, lenses, my editing process, and started to admire my work.I have a long way to go, but I finally feel happy on the path to which I am going in.

I will always continue to learn and grow as an artist, but there was a time I wanted to give it all up! I've learned to not let anyone rain on my parade and neither should you! Keep doing what you love to do... regardless of equipment.. regardless of what others say.

Remember, it's not the camera that takes a great photo.. It is you after all. People will hire you based on your art. Find you. Find your style and be you.. the sky is the limit after that... I promise!Remember and say this to yourself.......

EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER OUT THERE STARTED SOMEWHERE!

They didn't just start clicking and become pros.. It took them a lot of time (sometimes decades) and effort to get to where they are today.I, myself, have a long road to go.. LONG LONG JOURNEY... but I'm finally liking and enjoying the road to get there!

However, check out this work and what is in my portfolio currently.. it is a night and day difference in less than a year's time!

Happy Shooting, my friends!
